Summer Stress? Nature Can Help You Recharge

Summer is often seen as a season of relaxation, but busy schedules, travel plans, social commitments, and long days can sometimes leave us feeling overwhelmed. Finding moments to slow down and reconnect with ourselves can be an important part of maintaining balance.

One of the simplest ways to support mental wellness is also one of the most accessible: spending time outdoors. Whether it’s a walk through the park, gardening in your backyard, or enjoying a meal outside, time in nature can help your body and mind recharge.

Nature Supports Stress Relief

Spending time outdoors has been linked with improved mood and reduced feelings of stress. Natural environments provide a break from the constant stimulation of screens, notifications, and busy schedules. Even a short amount of time outside, like 5-10 minutes, can create an opportunity to slow down and become more present.

Being surrounded by greenery, fresh air, and natural light encourages relaxation and mindfulness.

Sunlight and Mood

Sunlight plays an important role in supporting our internal rhythms. Exposure to natural light helps regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycle and can support energy levels and mood.

After spending more time indoors during colder months, summer provides a natural opportunity to reconnect with daylight and create healthier routines.

Outdoor Movement Feels Different

Exercise doesn’t have to happen indoors or feel like a chore. Outdoor movement can make activity feel more enjoyable and refreshing.

Movement combined with fresh air is a win-win supporting physical and mental well-being. We like to get moving outside by:

  • Walking through a local park or trail
  • Gardening
  • Swimming
  • Biking
  • Playing games (soccer, volleyball, etc.) with family and friends (many cities now have adult outdoor rec leagues!)
  • Bringing a yoga mat outside for a quick flow

Creating Outdoor Wellness Rituals

Small habits can help make time outside a consistent part of your routine. Wellness routines don't need to be complicated to be effective.

You can try pairing outdoor time with something you are already going to do, such as:

  • Drinking your morning coffee or smoothie outdoors
  • Taking a walk after dinner
  • Eating lunch outside
  • Reading in the sunshine
  • Making plans with friends to be outdoors (even if it's simply requesting a table outside for a dinner date)

Pairing Outdoor Time with Nourishment

Summer is also the perfect time to enjoy fresh, hydrating foods. Simple moments of nourishment and connection with nature can turn everyday routines into wellness rituals.

We're particularly fond of these summer snacks outside:

Nature offers a simple reminder to slow down, breathe, and reconnect. Spending time outside can help restore energy, reduce stress, and create a greater sense of balance.

This summer, make time for the outdoors. A few intentional moments in nature may be exactly what your body and mind need.
