Why September Is the Time to Revisit New Year's Goals
At the beginning of January, it’s easy to feel motivated by the idea of a fresh start. We set goals, make plans, and imagine all the things we’ll accomplish in the year ahead.
Then life happens.
Schedules change, priorities shift, vacations come and go, and some of those January goals naturally fall to the bottom of the list. By the time September arrives, it can feel like an entirely different year.
But September offers another opportunity for a fresh start, without the pressure of starting over.
Think Check-In, Not Catch-Up
Instead of looking at the goals you haven't accomplished and feeling behind, use September as a chance to ask what is still important to you.
Maybe your original goal still feels meaningful. Maybe your priorities have changed. Or perhaps you discovered that the goal you set in January wasn't actually realistic for your life.
There is nothing wrong with changing direction! A wellness goal should support your life, not make you feel like you're constantly failing at it.
What Is Working?
Before deciding what you want to change, take a moment to notice what's already going well or what has stuck from your goals.
Are you drinking more water than you were in January? Have you been walking more? Are you eating more fruits and vegetables? Have you found a breakfast that keeps you energized throughout the morning?
These small wins count. Often, the habits that have become part of your routine are more meaningful than the ambitious goals that never quite stuck.
Choose One or Two Priorities
September can bring a lot of structure back into daily life. School schedules, work routines, sports, activities, and appointments can quickly fill the calendar.
Rather than adding ten new habits, choose one or two that feel manageable, such as:
- Add a fruit or vegetable to every meal
- Take a 20-minute walk each day or 10-minute walks after lunch and dinner
- Drink water before coffee or tea each morning
- Prepare breakfast the night before
- Create a consistent bedtime routine
- Find time for mindfulness and presence by hiding your phone for a set amount of time
Small goals are easier to repeat, and repetition is what turns a goal into a habit.
Let Your Goals Evolve
Your January self didn't know everything your September self knows.
Maybe you originally wanted to exercise every morning, but you've discovered that evenings fit your schedule better. Maybe you wanted to cook elaborate meals every night, but simple balanced meals and meal prep work better for your family.
That's not giving up on your goals, but learning what works and adjusting. Healthy habits need to be flexible enough to evolve with your life.
Create a Fall Routine You Actually Enjoy
September can be a wonderful time to establish simple rituals.
Start your morning with water and a nourishing breakfast. Keep fresh fruit available for snacks. Add an organic, cold-pressed Living juice to your morning routine. Take a walk after dinner. Prepare a few vegetables and grains on the weekend so weekday meals are easier.
The goal isn't perfection. It's creating a rhythm that makes healthy choices feel natural.
Check in. Adjust your goals. Start small. Keep going! Sometimes the healthiest reset is simply deciding what is worth carrying forward.
